Sunday 30 March.

Colyton Hall 9am.

A few late registrations were received along with a few associate members that signed up on the day.

A fantastic crew of helpers who just turned up so a special thanks to them all. A bit of a challenge to think of 2 separate courses and to think of 2 different finish lines but 1 start line. The race briefing was conducted at the Colyton School carpark. Order of start was changed due to a request  so that all the senior, Under 19, Under 17 male riders started first with Under 17 and under 19 females starting 1 minute back. The last off on the 33km Valley Rd circuit were the under 15 and under 13 riders a further minute back.

Then heading off in the other direction was all of the Masters riders in one bunch. There were fortunately no tales of riding without a seat today. Two of the women riders completed 2 laps whilst the rest of the riders completed 3 laps. Race reports will be forthcoming.

The first of the Masters events for the Overall Championships have been held for 2014.

The records table shown here has been updated to show all records either established for the first time or new records achieved.

Congratulations to all those that took part in the track events. There are still 2 more events to be held for this years overall championship. Those upcoming events are the time trial to be held on Saturday 29 march at Rongotea and the Hill Climb to be held at Ashhurst up the Saddle Rd on Sunday 6th April.

“Only mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun” Not sure if that was a song or just a saying but I do remember that from a long time ago. And another saying is when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

That could certainly be said about the week 5 time trial participants. And the times certainly prove the point. Discussion on the start line was about planing across the water and the theory certainly proved to be true with nearly everyone improving their times. Although there were tales of pouring with rain in Pahiatua, and bucketing down in Ashhurst it was only drizzle that abated before the start of the time trials. But umbrellas were soon out and at one point when it did stop drizzling and the one umbrella was folded up, it was taken as a bad thing to do and was quickly opened again. Matiu Kaihau came close to beating his course record that he set in 2013.

Next week will be the final night for time trials and the weather will determine whether next weeks results will be used in determining final results. But the way things stand at the moment it will be anyones guess as to who gets top prize. Prizemoney is awarded to financial members. Drinks and a few nibbles will be at prizegiving at the conclusion of next weeks time trials.

The final Wednesday night time trials have been held with the approach of autumn and the end of daylight savings.

The yard at Horizons was again a great place to meet, register and congregate at the end to compare notes on how the ride went for the night. And last night was no exception with drinks and nibbles on offer whilst the final riders returned.

There was a special spot prize draw for all riders as an enticement for all riders to stay for the prizegiving. Over the series numerous helpers have been involved in running this event and without their help this event would not be able to be run. So once again on behalf of all the riders a BIG THANKS to all that have helped out in any way.

Over this series we have had 75 riders compete, with a total of 194 results recorded.  The time trials return once daylight saving returns at the end of the year.

Some outstanding times were achieved this year and with the club time trial champs only 2 weeks away it is hoped that the improvement that the riders have made will be apparent at the champs.

Prizemoney was awarded to people who had gained 7 points or more so the point of consistency in always turning up no matter what the weather conditions certainly paid off for a few riders.

It was pleasing to see the number of riders increasing week on week for the Saturday club races. And even more pleasing to see a good number of D grade riders. For the Akers Rd circuit the D grade riders were asked to complete 3 laps a total of 22km with c grade completing 4 laps and B grade completing 5 laps. The first lap was completed in less than 12 mins by a small bunch of B grade riders including  Cameron Huston, Andrew McKenzie, Toshi and Andy and Adam Martin  who was a C grade rider that was hanging on to the lead bunch. They were quickly followed by Tom Pirie and Nigel Doyle. The wind along the back straight was picking up which was sure to make the coming laps interesting especially for anyone that was dropped. Less than a minute back was Greg Baker the first of the D graders followed by Max Taylor and Kelly Levin and Peita Ransom, Fergus Washington-Smith and Michael Richmond clearing the line for the first time in 15mins.The lap times were to remain pretty consistent throughout the race but a split on lap 2 had Cameron Huston crossing the line 1 minute ahead of the chasing bunch of 4. Cows crossing the road on the back straight had little effect on the lead group and the dry matter that was warned of in the race briefing was notably moister as the riders crossed the path of the cow crossing. Cameron was able to maintain his lead in the front eventually making it across the finish line in 1hour 1 min and 57 secs nearly a 2 minute gap back to the chasing bunch. First of the c grade riders was Adam Martin and first of the D grade was Greg Baker.

Thanks to the helpers on the day, marshals Julie Washington-Smith, Kirsty Levin, Linley McKenzie and the bell ringers Charlotte and Emily
