IMG_1579The Massey/Bike Manawatu December training camp has just wound up.

We have had 21 junior riders from all over NZ stay for four nights after the Novice Tour to ride the local roads and learn from the experts at Massey.

By all accounts, they had a great time and have asked when the next camp will be!

The final night to accumulate points and what should be a factor that doesn’t surprise, the weather. After a balmy warm afternoon in town and arriving out at Kairanga early it felt as if there was rain in the air. And sure enough right on time it started to rain. But it was warm and no wind and only light rain. So with the prospects of only the die hards turning up and calls from one to cancel “Toughen up – Megan” helpers were assigned their various jobs. One clever person suggested that all riders stand in the shelter of the Horizons building and cross the road to the start line when it was their time to start. “Toughen up – Andy”

With there being talk in the air that it was raining in Ashhurst yet it being a fine night at Kairanga the decision was made to leave the laptop in the dry and record all times start and finish the old way.

Thanks to all helpers. Without these people we would not be able to hold this event. And with the new people still showing up each week  it would be interesting to see a night when everybody is able to turn up.

To date we have had 100 people in this series participate. With only a couple of weeks left the points are accumulating nicely.

Darn wind. With safety the paramount factor, a few riders were sent down the road to see just how bad it was. With smiles on their faces they returned and after some honest discussion it was decided to call off the time trials for the night.

For those dedicated riders that had turned up ready to ride they were awarded a point as no one would have been able to better a previous best time in those conditions.

A cold breeze come wind and a threatening sky made for unpleasant conditions for both Rider and Spectator on the first Tuesday night meeting of the season. The meeting was made up of graded short scratch races followed by 400 metre individual time trials followed by graded short handicap races and finish off with graded long handicap races.

A highlight of the night was the two victories by under 15 rider Max Cousins, while he was the limit marker on each of his handicap races he rode solo in the challenging windy conditions to hold off a fast finishing bunch. The close finish in Max's second victory had the spectators on the edge of their seats as the scratch riders closed quickly on the last lap and a final effort from Dineth Rajapakse saw Max win by less than a wheel length.
