Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Club National Road Championships in Wanganui last week. This, the premier event in NZ for the age group road riders, was well represented by the green jerseys of Bike Manawatu.

In the road races, held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, good fields and very hard racing was the order. Friday’s races were marred by accidents mainly due to a slippery decent before the uphill to the finish. Mark Findlay and Michaela Drummond stamped their authority on the U17 men’s and U15 women’s races respectively with strong wins, outsprinting the leading groups.

Below are the results as confirmed on the Bike NZ website. Listed here are the 1st place getters along with the results for the Bike Manawatu riders. Highlighted are Bike Manawatu medal winners. Congratulations to all that took part. Time trial results are listed after the road race results.

Even though preregistration for the event was called for not many people had preregistered. So when the weather turned out fine although a bit cooler with a brisk wind it was good to see a large turnout. A lot of riders were using the event as a final practice before the Club Nationals in a weeks time. Sixteen A grade riders headed off to complete 2 laps of the 33km circuit from Colyton down to Ashhurst up to Valley Rd and then back to Colyton. It took the lead riders exactly an hour to complete the first lap, at which stage 3 riders had a small advantage over the chasing bunch. However those lead riders were caught on the second lap and with the tough wind conditions a couple of riders called it a day and di not complete the second lap. Unfortunately there were only 3 B grade riders registered. They were to complete 2 laps of the course also but they were combined with the 9 C grade riders which only had to do one lap of the course. The D grade was going to complete the same circuit but due to the lack of experience of some of the riders and the conditions the D grade was split and 2 riders went with the C grade and the remaining 5 riders did a shortened race from Colyton out to the top of the Valley Rd lookout and return. This was the final event for awhile as after Nationals next week we will be having a break for a few weeks. Keep an eye on the club calendar to see when the next Saturday race will be.

At 8am this morning there was not a breath of wind in Wanganui. The river although it still did not look the most inviting it did not have a ripple on it.

However by about 9am when the first riders were heading off up the time trial course the wind had started to pick up and it fluctuated throughout the day. At one point about midday we could look back at Wanganui and see the rain coming. It did but it was only light misty rain that didn't stay around for long. Although I do not have all the results to hand the results so far were pleasing.

Notable preformances today were from
Michaela Drummond who was placed 4th in under 15 girls

Rachel Southee who was placed 5th in under 19 women

Jocelyn Goodwin who was placed 3rd in Masters 3 women

Sue McMaster who also placed 3rd in Masters 4 women

Steve Stannard who also placed 3rd in Masters 2 Men

Full results for today will be on the website tomorrow.

NZ Jounior ToursWe had two junior tours over the last few weekends, the CRI Tour in Rotorua and TeAwamutu Jnr Tour - both of significance to the NZ junior selectors for the 2011 teams.

Mark Findlay’s strong performances at the Central Hawkes Bay, Rotorua and Te Awamutu cycling tours will definitely have caught the eye of NZ selectors.  He finished 2nd, 1st and 7th respectively in the three tours.  His consistent performances would be sufficient enough to justify a place in the NZ U17 team.
