We could not have asked for a better day as far as the weather was concerned. Very little wind and the sun was shining , which meant that riders that were waiting their turn to join the team were able to socialise with other riders/bones. The teams really entered in to the spirit of the competition with all team members assembling at registration and cheering off their first bone. The first pick up point was to be at Colyton and the 9 riders that left Ashhurst were given the race briefing that stated they could ride as a bunch until they pick up their third bone at Ashhurst.

Despite having the advantage of an expanded rider base following the amalgamation of three clubs, Bike Manawatu is well behind Wanganui Cycling Club after the first two rounds of the Inter Club Winter Series.  The annual race series between the two clubs dates back to the 1930s however the competition had been in abeyance until 2009 when it was re-instated.  Last year Palmerstone north Marist came within a point or two of taking the cup in what was an enjoyable well fought series.  The first two races this year have seen Wanganui take a strong lead which is simply down to number.  Bike Manawatu have a chance to even the score by having a large turnout to the last two races which will be run on the 6th (Ashurst Saddle) and 20th (Halcombe Cemetery Circuit) of August.  All races are graded with points going towards cash prizes in each grade plus the overall Inter Club Cup. Please come out and support the club as we aim to win the series.  For Race 3 we will have a home advantage up the saddle, with A and B grades racing out to Highland Home then back up the the Saddle and C and D going out to Waterford Pub then back through Ashurst to the top of the Saddle.

PNGHS Team

PNBHS Senior A along with PNGHS Junior A and PN Intermediate Normal Year 7/8 boys all took second placings at the coveted North Island Schools Cycling team time trial champs held in Cambridge on 2nd July. In what were pretty good winter conditions, the PNBHS team were only 17 seconds slower than eventual winners Hamilton Boys’ High School over the 16km course. “We certainly had some very high hopes this year and we are all very pleased with the outcome,” said team captain, Luuk van Wagtendonk. “We now know where we stack up against the other teams and we can focus on developing more speed.”
