On Tuesday evening 3 weeks ago a group of people from all over the region gathered at the Hockey Turf Pavilion to learn about cycling.

The Cycling Uncovered programme is organised and run jointly by Chris Foggin of Bike NZ and Suzanne Winterburn of Sport Manawatu.

It runs for 8 weeks culminating at the end with participants entering and completing their first ever event - the Tour de Manawatu.

Over the eight weeks they are taught everything from how to change a tube if they have a puncture, nutrition when cycling, how to ride in town, coping with other traffic and how to hill climb and ride in bunches.

Bike Manawatu is expecting an influx of rider’s new to track cycling this season.

Key factors that will encourage our new member’s each week are:

  1. A friendly welcoming environment
  2. Support and encouragement; and
  3. Having fun

To help achieve that, we are looking for some “Mentors/Buddies”.

Can you help?

If you are a current rider, young (under 17 & 19) through to old, past or present and associated with the track in anyway, we would very much like to hear from you. .

What’s involved in being a Buddy Mentor?

· Attend club racing events between October and December:

· Making the new member feel welcome.

· Answer questions or refer to them to an appropriate person, such as coach, official, someone with mechanical knowledge etc.

· Observe races, giving positive and supportive feedback.

Being a Buddy/Mentor can be very rewarding and if you also compete the commitment is not intended to impact on your own racing.

For Bike Manawatu member’s who are starting track cycling for the first time this season, you may like to have a Mentor/Buddy.

The Manawatu Mountain Bike Club have been working with DOC for over 3 years to get access to the Manawatu Gorge. DOC have been really supportive and have assisted with gaining access across a local landowners land to access the scenic reserve.

Manawatu Mountain Bike Club are now at the point of needing some money to build the track and to do this they need to gather user data.

Can you help by completing a short survey?
