Resurgence

It’s been incredibly heartening to witness the ever increasing numbers of riders fronting up for Bike Manawatu events.
Across all grades we have seen an upswing in attendance and performance and this shows that we , as a club, are in good shape.
On behalf of the BM board and Events Committee we acknowledge the riders, volunteers and our wonderful team of sponsors for us to keep up our “On and Forward” protectory.

Now, in a rather un seasonable time period, it’s time for Postponed Age Group Nationals (AGN’s) in the hopefully sunny Waipukurau in Mid July. Many members had entered for the April event and have stayed in shape for the new date.
Our club has been a bit light on representation over the years but, with the event being on our back door step, it’s great to see many riders giving Nationals a go for the first time.

As a pre-curser to the AGRN’s Bike Manawatu, Nick Spark from Levin Cycling and other WCNI clubs went to work to put on the WCNI ITT championship and he WCNI Road racing championship this weekend.
Entries were all accepted on line and closed at 51 ITT and 88 Road Race entries. Because it is Age group you are racing your own age, but not necessarily ability. It is the next level of racing and congratulation to all that have entered.
Racing back to back is tough, racing in winter is hard and both courses are challenging in the prevailing wind.

In August we will resume shorter graded races, linking up with Schools Cycling at their events. While MSC have the traffic management in place we will have our grades follow the school grades.
The ability and desire of both groups to work together is essential, whilst not interfering with the training and racing programme that MSC has in place as a lead up to North Island and NZ Schools championships in September.

Looking forward from there, BM is working with other local established teams for the Trust House Series in the Wairarapa. There’s been an informal meeting and our representation at the series is looking fantastic.
The licencing window for Cycling New Zealand opens at the start of October, It’s a good idea to get your 2021 licence early to reap the benefits of having your Race licence and joining your local club at the same time.

Taupo entries are now open, Novice tour 2020 new date is October 31-November 1 and there’s some very exciting announcements coming out of CNZ about………cant say too much.

Big weekends in the middle of the year.

We couldn’t have wished for a better weekend of weather than we got to run the WCNI ITT and Road Race Championship on.
We all accept that July is marginal with weather in the Manawatu, or any month to be fair, but the weekend of July 4^th and 5^th was a cracker.

With regional racing,  or “Centre” as the official term is,  classification is on Age and Gender.
Over the years there’s been a down turn in Centre championship participation and it’s an intention of the BM board to re-ignite the tradition.
The word tradition has a large part to play with cycling. We accept all sports evolve, and popularity comes and goes. Cycling has a huge history on New Zealand and we are determined to do our bit.

The ITT was held at Rongotea with 45 riders over 2 distances. Honours were spread between local and out of town riders with most backing up for the Road Race the next day.
Glenn Haden from Whanganui was the quickest on the long course averaging around 48kph while Josh Mulcahy took out the short course. See all results here.

The Road Race course was a rethink of a bit of old and a bit of new. With a 20 and a 42 km loop we had options for distances comparable on what the Age Group Road Nationals (AGRN) will be run as.
Awesome conditions and some fantastic racing made what we believe one of the better events that BM has staged in years. To have an outdoor prize giving in the afternoon sun capped off a great day.
Local international rider Joel Yates took away the supreme award with once again honours spread across all clubs across all age groups. See all results here

Age Group racing is the next step up, not to be taken lightly but certainly nothing to be scared of.

Age Group Road Nationals

This weekend at Waipukurau. ITT’s on Friday with Road racing Saturday and Sunday.
This year BM is represented by 54 riders, a number well up on previous years. There is an increase in white shirts and hi viz vests because for most of us, this is as big as it gets.
Congratulations and good luck to all riders but especially our own Bike Manawatu reps. Many of our members are trying AGRN for the first time and they will all benefit and learn from the experience.

2019 Financial Review

All members were sent an email on the 10th March 2020 plus again on Thursday 23rd July 2020 advising:
The Board of Bike Manawatu is proposing to change our Charitable Purpose from "Providing junior development funding for the local cyclists competing nationally and Internationally and running events" to "Providing funding for our members competing nationally and internationally and running events"
The board sees this as an exciting and much needed change, meaning we can consider applications for funding assistance from all of our members, not just the junior category.
Whilst this does not change our club constitution the Bike Manawatu Board believe it is our responsibility to let all of our members know of this change which will be brought up at our AGM with plenty of time for transparency.
We would also like to have an open forum during our General Business and invite you tell us what you enjoy or would like to see changed, how we could improve etc - all feedback is welcome.
Providing solutions for any problems is always a bonus

ALSO:
For some time there has been an amount of $50,000 in the financial records of Bike Manawatu. There has been confusion as to where these funds came from and also conjecture as to its intended use, many believing, as currently documented, it is to contribute towards the development of a criterium track.

After exhaustive research by the Bike Manawatu Secretary, Keryn Paekau, it has been confirmed that this money has come from members funds and not a community fund, as previously thought. If the money had been received via grants, there would be documentation to support the grant application and its purpose and as a Board we would be duty bound to either use it for that purpose, or return the money.

The board still consider a dedicated criterium track would be a fantastic asset for cyclist in the Manawatu region, however given the current economic climate, as a result of COVID-19, sponsorship and grant money being difficult to access and the fact that this project is not including the Manawatu Councils 10 year district plans, this goal is neither realistic, or achievable. Therefore the board would like to remove the reference to the use of this money for the development of a criterium track from the financial review document.

The board believe that a portion of this money could be utilised to purchase a dedicated Traffic Management Vehicle (truck). The reasoning behind this decision is based primarily on managing risk and securing the future of Bike Manawatu. Costs associated with running cycling events have escalated, traffic management compliance expenses have doubled in the last twelve months and have directly contributed to another local cycling club being forced out of existence. Instead of paying for third party providers, the board would prefer to manage traffic management internally, which we believe will provide significant cost savings in hosting events.

Over the last twelve months and particularly post COVID-19 lockdown we have seen exceptional interest and growth from the local cycling community in supporting events. As a board our focus is on ensuring we can continue to promote and provide cycling events and ensuring these are done with a strong focus on safety and meeting all regulatory requirements.  Currently, Tim Lloyd is dedicating a large amount of time to the oversite of events and in particular traffic management and safety. Tim is using the club trailer and his own vehicle to transport traffic management equipment to and from events. With a dedicated Traffic Management vehicle, equipment can be stored securely and is readily transportable and will allow greater opportunity for other club members to provide assistance, to Tim with setting up and management of events.

Along with club racing the Traffic Management vehicle would also be utilised for the Novice Tour, Feilding Festival of Cycling and could be hired out to other events, such as Gravel and Tar. The Board would therefore like to release an amount of up to $20,000 of the term deposit to put towards this project, with the remaining funds being reinvested as a term deposit.

As a board we want to grow as a club and support and develop our local riders, this investment will assist in achieving these goals.
