Register online for track HERE.

BikeManawatu track and road bikes on track racing starts on Monday October 24th (Labour day). This year you can register online for the season, so that at your first track meet all that is required is for you to sign the wavier form, pay ($20 cash for the whole season) and in return you will receive your season number, which will hopefully speed up the registration process.

PRE-REGISTRATIONS CLOSE AT 10AM ON MONDAY 24 OCTOBER 2016. If you miss this deadline you can register before racing at the track. If you are planning on racing with us this season but do not plan to be at the first track meet please still register online (takes less than 5 minutes, just make sure you have your CyclingNZ licence number handy if you have one).

All information is considered confidential, but in registering you agree that your contact information may be shared between organisers if required.

If you have any track administration issues please contact Kate Stewart (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Its all going to happen at Johnston Park Feilding to set the track racing season start on labour day October.

We had a good turnout for the track working bee and thanks to all who helped. Marty Baker has done a great job water blasting the spectators concrete seating and surrounds and it looks great being so tidy and clean. The inside of the grass verge around the track has been sprayed and sections of the track has had the Lichen sprayed.

We have potentially hired out 24 track bikes and Brent Zimmerman and myself have set the riders positions up on the track and there looks to be some very promising U15 and U17 ‘rookie’ riders. There will be a big field in the U15’s grade and it is likely we will run A and B grades in this section. Again this year there will be a sparkling brand new Hillbrick track bike to be awarded to a most promising rookie rider in the U15 or U17 grade. This will be judged by a 3 person panel and the winner will be presented with the Hillbrick track bike at the November 20th meeting.

Information

  • Cancellations of meeting due to bad weather will be posted on the BikeManawatu Track Cycling Facebook group 45 minutes before track start time. We will also endeavor to get this posted on the BikeManawatu website and Facebook page
  • REMEMBER ALL NEW TRACK RIDERS (ROOKIES) ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND ONE OF TWO TRACK ORIENTATION SESSIONS TO BE HELD EITHER ON THE SATURDAY 14TH OR SUNDAY 15TH OCTOBER AT 1:30PM. This compulsory session involves learning how to ride the track safely and you will be required to have your track bike, helmet, cycling shoes, cycling kit, and gloves
  • Racing grades: You will start at the beginning of the season in the grade according to your 2017 CyclingNZ license category (this is dependent on your age at the 31st December)
  • Cost: $20.00 for the whole 2016/17 season (racing before and after Christmas), this is to be paid in cash when you register at your 1st meeting of the season. Kate Stewart will be at the first two meetings running registration, so you may need to arrive slightly earlier to register. Registration involves payment, signing the waver, filling out your contact details and receiving your number for the season
  • Numbers: Again this year you will be responsible for your own number. This involves bringing it to each race meet (NO NUMBER = NO RESULT) and returning it at the end of the season. If your number is not returned to Kate Stewart or Ian Gray within a month of the last track meet you will be charged $20.00
  • Licensing: Track riders need to be at least a member of BikeManawatu club. To race at WCNI events a centre license is required. National events require a CyclingNZ race license
  • We are always after volunteers, please click here to read more. We especially would like to know who has their 1st aid certificate.
  • Commissaries course is in the pipeline and at this stage it looks like WCNI will pay half and BikeManawatu will pay half. This is a junior course and is just an introduction, so anyone can put their hand up to do it! If you are interested in doing the course please contact Christine Christie (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Ian Gray.

It also looks likely we will have enough riders to run a masters grade this season and this will certainly encourage our older riders.

I would like to wish all riders the best of luck for the season and hope we have some good Spring and Summer weather.

We will have some exciting competitions coming up so for information keep watching the ‘Track Cycling’ section of the BikeManawatu website and the BikeManawatu track Cycling Facebook group.

To be a great track rookie (new to track cycling) you need to read all the important tips below

  • You need to carry out all these things stated below. In cycling all little things add up to make you a better rider
  • Get your position on your track bike checked out on the track. A track position is different to your road bike. We have good coaches with lots of experience to help you set your bike up
  • Most track cycling is explosive short distance and you need ti be well warmed up. Get there early to meetings to get well warmed up. If cold, bring plenty of warm clothes to keep warm
  • Wear gloves and a singlet under your racing top
  • For bike fittings bring your cycling shoes and pedals; and measure your seat height and know your crank length on your road bike
  • Pulling your feet out if your clip less pedals is extremely dangerous on the track as in track racing you are often putting optimum pressure on the pedals. It is very strongly recommended that you get Velcro straps fitted. We will do this for you at minimal cost
  • Make sure your tyres are pumped up near to the maximum recommended pressure for the tyres specification. Don’t role soft tyres; your bike rolls much easier at correct pressure. Check this before each meeting or training session
  • For rookie riders (new to track) it is compulsory to attend one of the orientation sessions organised on 15 or 16 of October (see track programme here)
  • It is recommended you purchase a book “Beginners Guide to Road and Track Cycling” Authors Ian Gray and Jonathan Kennett. It has a lot of essential information for ‘rookie’ track riders. These will be available at half price for new track riders (normal price $20). For the first two riders that book in for a track bike hire appointment they will receive a free book!

Our weekly Speed League series runs throughout summer from 4-6pm October 30-December 11, 2016 and January 22-March 26, 2017. Speed League is not a club event and is open to anyone. We're potentially looking at doing a Sprint Wars on January 15, 2017 depending on what other carnivals/ events are on - and yes, we'll rip the format straight from the Avantidrome series of the same name :)
Wellington Junior Track Champs (other centres welcome!) 12pm, February 4, 2017
Laykold Cup Carnival 12pm, February 26, 2017:
Our big carnival, cash prizes, loads of great racing and the ideal prep for Age Group Nationals!
