This Sunday (11 September) at 2pm we have our working bee to clean up the track for the upcoming season.

The Feilding Festival of Cycling (FFOC) prizegiving also starts this time, which provides the perfect opportunity for those on their way home from the FFOC to call in and give us a hand, whilst the ones that are not involved with the FFOC prizegiving can get started with the clean up.

Please bring brooms, shovels etc. and some warm clothes if it's cold!

See this map below if you are unfamiliar with the track.

The excitment of the track season is building and here is what you need to know so far, whether you are new or experienced track rider.

Track cycling in the Manawatu is a service provided by BikeManawatu. It is run by a track committee, headed by Ian Gray and works closely with the BikeManawatu board and secretary Christine Christie. The committee met on 30 August and the minutes from this meeting are avaliable here.

All important track cycling information will be posted on this section (Track Cycling) on the BikeManawatu website. Reminder messages and links to te website will be posted on the BikeManawatu Facebook page and the 'BikeManawatu Track Cycling' Facebook group. If you can't find what you are looking for on these platforms contact Kate Stewart (email: This email address is being protected from spambots. Please see below for information on out track cycling and road bikes on track services, including programmes leading up to Christmas. Our first event we would like as many people to get involved in is the working bee at the Feilding Velodrome on Sunday 11 September at 2pm. Please bring your brooms, shovels, buckets and any other handy tidying up tools you may have - many hands make light work!!

Track Cycling

Is a good mix of competitive and fun racing in a very social, off road environment. We encourage any new riders to come along to our ‘have a go day’ on 8th October 2016 to give riding on the track a go.

Caters for: ALL ages and abilities as the racing is split up into grades. Riders ride in their 2017 (new year) license category.

Equipment Required: Track bike is necessary. This can be hired from BikeManawatu for a very reasonable price per season. Track bikes can also be picked up second hand or brought from a bike shop. More information on bike hire will be out in the coming week.

Cost: $20 for whole season.

Licensing: Riders planning to race on the track require at least a BikeManawatu Membership.

Location: Johnston Park Velodrome, Feilding

When? Run over the summer months (October to April), on Sunday afternoons leading up to Christmas, and Tuesday evenings at 6pm after Christmas. New riders who are racing with us for their first season must attend one of the two orientation days on 15th and 16th October.

Road Bikes on Track

Is a great introduction to cycling  (especially track cycling), where riders can keep fit and/or bring out their competitive side in a safe, controlled environment.

Caters for: ALL ages, mainly attracting primary to high school aged people.

Equipment requirements: Any sort of bike (BMX, mountain bike or road bike) and a helmet.

Cost: One off gold coin donation to contribute to spot prizes at the end of the season.

Location: Johnston Park Velodrome, Feilding

When? Runs over the summer months (October to March), on either Sunday afternoons or Monday evenings.

Volunteers

Track Racing doesn’t happen without the hard work of many. We currently have a very passionate group of volunteers, lead by Ian Gray that make track racing possible.

For the 2016/17 track season we want to recruit and train up more volunteers, so that we can roster the roles around each week so that not the same people are running track each week. If you are new to a role, as you learn we will have you working with an experienced person, until you are familiar with the task.

There are many roles that need to be filled including:

  • Judges
  • Time keepers
  • Starter
  • Result recorders
  • Handicapping
  • 1st Aid
  • Gate control/ calling the next race up
  • Report writing- please let us know if you are interested in writing a report about the racing to be posted on the BM web site after each meet. A roster will be made so that the task is shared around

If you are willing to help out this season, please let Kate Stewart know This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. After we have a list of volunteers we can share the jobs around and post on the website each week with who is helping out.

The more volunteers we have, the easier and safer it is for everyone!

Next Sunday 20th March is our last track day at 3pm to close a successful 2015/16 track season.

A lot of new riders, especially in the U15 grade who started track this season have made very good improvement, which has been pleasing to see. It is going to be difficult to pick the most improved rider to win the trophy and prize money will be awarded at the annual meeting on the 5th April.

Next Sunday there will be prize money for end of season wheel races in each grade. Be there to celebrate the track season 2015/16.

We will have a few sausages on the BBQ if someone puts their hand up to organise this. Please contact Kate if you want to throw something together (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

IMPORTANT:

-Those who have hired bikes this season are asked, if possible, to return them after the meeting next Sunday.

Any rider wising to retain their bike to ride track at North Island School championships at Cambridge later in the year please contact Ian.

-Numbers must also be returned to be eligible for prize money at the prize giving

What a amazing track season we had! It was fun and safe, with good weather.

The season is well finished, so I thought I would put together a report for the Board on how it went (before we start planning next season).

Please send me any feedback on how you thought the track season went (road bikes and track bikes).

  • Positive
  • Negative (Positive criticism)
  • Improvements / suggestions

Feedback are all welcome! By sending me some brief feedback you are helping improve track for the future.

Also, if you want to help out in more of an active roll next year, by maybe being in the track committee or in some other way please let me know!

Thanks,

Kate Stewart
