A stunning Saturday morning dawned and continued throughout the day for a very fast warm ride up the Wanganui River at the Cycling Wanganui annual Ross Cup held over 38km there and back. 56 riders in 4 handicapped grades raced up SH4. BikeManawatu was represented with 5 riders who featured prominently in the placings.

The first race of the new season was a huge success with new riders enjoying the experience. This race was set to challenge the riders and the results will be used to grade and set handicaps for the upcoming graded and handicap races. Fine weather may have been the drawcard for some but for others it was a chance to get a good race after the winter break from racing. For some members who brought along a new person to club racing they actually got free entry. So it was good to see some new faces and new names on the results list.

Special thanks to all of the helpers on the day especially Brent Ellery who was the marshall and turn point for the junior riders. Also to Tony Reddrop who was out at Colyton corner and the lead and tail vehicles driven by Graeme Ransom and Mike Simpson. The helpers on the finish line had a few minor problems with timing systems but thanks to Suzanne Winterburn and Gordon Groube the results for the juniors were spot on. Some confusion in the senior race as the finish line  was stated clearly at race briefing by Mark Waterland that it was going to be a sprint finish straight down Oxford St. Some riders mistakenly turned down Wyndham St but the results recorded with the assistance of Alex Denham and again Suzanne Winterburn reflect that it was a good tight finish. Thanks also to Rebecca Denholm for collecting back in the race numbers.

A small group of Novice riders rode one lap of the Halcombe  - Stanway circuit accompanied by one of the parents.

This group was sent on their way after all the graded riders had departed. The winner of this grade was Dylan Simpson.

First over the line  in the graded race was a group of 3 riders including Robert Stannard, Leyton Gapper and Ross Rainham. These 3 had all set off in B grade with an 8 minute handicap on the D grade riders. The fastest times for the day went to Jordan castle followed closely by Chris Denholm and Steve Stannard.

Special thanks to our helpers for the day. Without the support of these people these events are not possible. Neil Pollock and Steve Perry were our corner marshalls and the registration was aided by Kirsty Kaihau and finish line Leonie Hapeta and Judith Elliott. Thanks also to Rebecca who followed the race as tail vehicle.

Thanks to Steve Stannard for bringing the trailer out and Brendan Hapeta for taking it home.

Thanks to Ashhurst School parents and Ross for assistance on Sunday and Carol Roberts for coordinating registration & results. The results are top 5 points, then followed by finishing order on the final lap.

Based on feed back the course was a success & provided some new variety. We have a further points race at Linton Army camp on 12 August.

This Sunday is a road race at Hiwinui School (new track) - school hosts are PNBHS
