It was again another windy night at Kairanga but with keen eager riders arriving at 5.30 and the prospect of no better conditions over the coming weeks it was decided to go ahead with this weeks competition.

Some hardy characters that had dared the blustery conditions from the previous week were granted a point for week 1 although no times were taken so everyone was able to post their first time tonight.

There will be keen interest at the top of the table as people jostle for fastest course times. A split second is all it takes.

Numbers have been given to riders for the season to be used at road races, track and time trials. It makes it a lot easier if these numbers are correctly pinned to shirts – that way the number is easily read as you cross the finish line and recorded.  A check on positioning of numbers will be made next week at the start line. Numbers need to be on the left hand side lower back preferably on the angle so that when you are in your riding position that the number appears level.

If we had left it to the weatherman we would have stayed at home as the forecast had predicted rain and dangerous winds. Fortunately 29 independent thinking track cyclists plus support people made the decision to make the trip to Johnston Park and were not disappointed as we all enjoyed great conditions for the opening meeting of the 2012-13 track cycling season.

Twelve of the 29 riders present were new to track cycling. The programme made allowances for this by having shorter races with a maximum of 5 riders per race followed by individual 1 lap time trials then 4 lap races and finished off with longer handicap races.

The highlight of the day was the depth of talent from the returning riders and the potential within the 12 rookies. The stand out one lap performance was from first year under 17 girl Michaela Drummond posting a time of 33.88 seconds unofficially beating the existing track record time of 34.44 seconds. The best race of the day was the under 17 8 lap handicap race. The 4 limit markers of Joel Yates, Hayden Washington-Smith, Hamish Mikkelsen and Simone Davie had a lead of 260 metres over the scratch riders.

Novice Tour 2012

The day dawned a typical clear calm Manawatu spring day, perfect for a bike race.  The Junior Tour had been long in it’s preparation and those many hard-working Bike Manawatu volunteers charged with delivering what is New Zealand’s premier U17 tour were pleased the day had finally come.  The race was conducted over three stages, all on the one day, starting and finishing in Ashhurst.  It attracts the countries best U/17 cycling talent.  Recent previous winners include Olympians Shane Archbold, Westley Gough, and Sam Bewley.
First off were the boys on the 47 km Hiwinui Loop race, but starting up over the Watersheds.  We known to us at Bike Manawatu, the testing course had two KOMs, two intermediate sprints and a fast decent to the Mulgrave St finish.
