A proud and big congratulations go out to Emily Shearman her second time and Libby Arbuckle for being selected for the UCI Junior Track Championships to be held in China. Both young ladies have worked hard and performed well at key events to gain selection and along with their families, coaches and support teams Bike Manawatu congratulate you and wish you well for China. Local young Bike Manawatu talent once again on the world stage we should all be proud of.
Bike Manawatu Masters and Schools Racing
The upcoming Saturday race calendars for Bike Manawatu has been posted for the lead up to the club Champs on the 22 April. The proposed race for this Saturday the 18th of March has been cancelled due to many riders competing in Cambridge this weekend. Check out the new Saturday and Sunday race calendar for all ages and grades.
It is our intent that all masters or school riders at any level can race together over either a short or longer distance on the Saturday or Sunday for the benefit of everyone wanting to try out racing.
Head of School Cycling Mike Craine and his schools organising committee have welcomed masters riders to race on the Sunday morning Manawatu schools calendar at no charge this season.
Together Bike Manawatu members and our growing Schools cycling numbers enjoyed a successful Manfeild Criterium race series late last year where young and old enjoyed safe competitive racing side by side with everyone riding in their appropriate grades and loved it.
Our BM Saturday Race program can cater for this also and collaborating with Schools with their well organised Sunday race calendar we hope will give members the chance to try new events as we develop stronger ties between all cycling people in the Manawatu.
The benefit of racing is huge to everyone who cycles and for all social riders starting at the shorter 20km races distance is a great place to start. Check out the schools calendar and show up on a Sunday morning at the advertised start time. You will love it.
Bike Manawatu volunteer Roster needing your Help.
To conduct our Bike Manawatu Saturday races we require people to put your name on a roster list to help put on a rotational basis only. Generally five or six people per events is required. Just email us and your name will go in the hat and we can set up a roster so that our race events can grow. Riders who put themselves as helpers mean you might miss one of the races which we hope is a small price to pay for having such race events. Please let us know if you are happy to go on the roster for our upcoming events. Thank you to the few people who have put their name forward. We are hoping more will join the roster to make this club initiative easier for race organisers and racing.

Schools and Masters at Track Nationals
Watch for a busy track calendar for many Bike Manawatu members as schools and masters are full on competing at the National Age Group Champs at Cambridge at the moment.
Fresh off the track news as we write this newsletter is well known and respected Bike Manawatu rider Megan Blatchford-Peck has set a new New Zealand record for her master woman's age group in the 500m time trial and took out the gold medal by winning. As NZ title holder, we must congratulate Megan on a fantastic result.
Along with many other Bike Manawatu masters and schools riders set to contest their respective specialist events keep an eye out on results online.

I can recommend to anyone that attending the Sports Manawatu Annual Awards is definitely worth doing. Held at the Arena Manawatu BM centre last Friday which was staged like the Emmy Awards, this glitzy evening was a proud event for all sporting codes and their stars. Rugby, football, Sevens, Cycling, the list goes on. Trevor Shailer and his team at Sport Manawatu and MC Hamish McKay should be congratulated for an outstanding evening. Well done.
So should congratulations go out our cycling award winners Michaela Drummond and Campbell Stewart for taking out Junior Sports Women and Man of the year for the second consecutive year over some amazing sports nominees and finalists in there categories.
Equally finalist Emily Shearman for a great year in Cycling.
This is a prestigious event and a great outcome for Cycling and our Bike Manawatu Club.

Bike Manawatu Cyclists Riding for New Zealand
Here's just a taste of what some of our club riders are doing on the World Stage. Remember these riders having grown up riding and competing for our club in the Manawatu and are often riding alongside you on our BM rides. Next time you see them congratulate them on their success. They will appreciate it.
Campbell Stewart recently competed at the World Cup in Columbia in the team pursuit and Madison where his team mate Tom Sexton crashed twice for a DNF. Part of the racing experience is crashing I suppose. He and fellow BM track star Michaela Drummond are currently in Los Angeles racing for their country and will soon be back home competing in for the upcoming NZ Omnium Championships. Michaela has also landed a contract to race for a USA Pro Cycling Team and joins them in April. Good luck Michaela.
After some fantastic results at the Track Nationals, Emily Shearman and Libby Arbuckle's have been selected for the Junior Worlds in China this August. Also for the trio of Emily, Libby and Connie Obrien they have been selected to race for NZ at the Oceania Road Cycling championships in Canberra March 6-12.
To Robert Stannard, Michaela Drummond and Campbell Stewart who are finalist at the Manawatu Sports Awards we wish them every success after all achieving an outstanding last 12 months.
As a side note. A mention must also go out to Carne Groube, Joel Yates and Campbell Stewart for their sensational WCNI team pursuit time of 4.07 at the Track Nationals.
Cliff Hughes 3rd in BDO Wellington To Auckland Cycle Challenge
From firsthand experience this is a gruelling 12 stage race and we must congratulate all of our club riders who competed. The general classification results.3rd Cliff Hughes,5th Glenn Kirk,11th Mike Thompson. The average time for the winner for the 640k race was 36.05km
The hills, wind, rain, hail and intensity of the racing all hurt especially the time trial up Ruapehu from the Chateau to the Ski Field.
A special thank you to my team mates Tim Mackey and John Obrien who were part of our Bayleys Corporate Team who finished a credible 7th.

With the World championship only a few months away our rising Manawatu and New Zealand stars Campbell Stewart and Michaela Drummond were amongst the World Cup medals in Los Angeles last Sunday beating many of the world’s best. How fantastic for them and their supporters and so well deserved after all the hard work they have put in for so long.
A hard-fought silver medal for Michaela in the women team pursuit and a brilliant Silver for Campbell in the Omnium were just two shining moments amongst many at the World Cup.
Praise was given to Michaela who gave her experienced team mates a big lift for their outstanding result and Campbell who showed poise and class and his typical withering sprint finish for his teams phenomenal result. Check out Stuff for extended report.
Bike Manawatu Wednesday Time Trials fun for all ages.
John Arbuckle, Mike Groube and Denholm seem to run a good ship when it comes to events like the weekly Wednesday night Kairanga time trial at Lockwood road. Between 35 and 50 riders do the individual time trial of 6km out and 6km back on a weekly basis which is exciting stuff and great for your fitness and improves your speed out of sight. The event is open to all cyclists young or old. Give it a go. Well done to John Arbuckle and his Team. Registrations by 6pm and Time Trail starts at 6.30pm.

Watching in anticipation on TV last week to see Campbell take out his Halberg award for the best emerging talent in New Zealand must have been an excitement highlight for the humble Campbell and his family but also to everyone associated to him in cycling. We are all so proud of you Campbell. A special mention must also go out to Campbell's coach Mike McRedmond who must also take a bow for a job well done.
A Week of Hard Out Cycling
I write this week’s newsletter while on the BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge which is brutal for us weekend cyclists amongst the 275 riders. Myself and Bike Manawatu character Tim Mackey are riding for Bayleys in the Corporate Team Challenge and raising money on Give a Little for"Make a Wish". Tim and I are having lots of laughs but hurting every day.
At the time I sent this newsletter BM Club Members Glen Kirk is winning with Cliff Hughes and Mike Thompson not too far behind with three days to go. We have had constant wind, rain and even hail to contend with and two hill stages have had to be cancelled due to violent winds. Nice summer we having don't you think.

Manawatu Cycle Challenge
A lot of our members rode the Manawatu Cycle Challenge last weekend and reports are they really enjoyed the event. Sam Gardner won the gruelling 144km in a time of 4.02.04, Colin Sullivan the 104km in 3.27.08,Charlie Studd the 72km in 2.06.33,and Ewan Cousins the 36km in 1.06.56.
