The Hiwinui 18km circuit is a familiar safe circuit to most cyclist in the Manawatu. That is why we invite all members who are interested in trying out graded racing to come along on Saturday to ride or help out. The circuit is close to home and you will be fit enough after your summer season of riding and events and at only $5 the event is extremely affordable. Just bring yourself and or your cycling buddies and enjoy the outing at whatever level or grade you are at. It will be all over in around two hours for everyone. This kind of fun unites people and our club. Check out graded rides and on the day the race organisers we will manage which grade suits you. See you there.

Michaela Drummond Bronze at World Track Cycling Champs
Congratulations to Michaela Drummond and her amazing Bronze medal performance in the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, the first NZ women's team since 2011 to have medalled in this event. To top that off, this is Michaela's first year at elite level and she clocked a personal best time of 4.20.17. A huge effort.
Her successful world championships didn't stop there. The gruelling Madison and her outstanding ride for 4th place in the Madison in only her and her team mate Racquel Sheath fifth time of riding the Madison was an eye opener.
Our local girl and her support team have done themselves, the club and New Zealand proud and will hopefully inspire all club cyclists what is possible to achieve.
Bike Manawatu Board
Please join us to congratulate two newly voted on board members Tim Lloyd and James Denholm who are well known to Bike Manawatu members. Firstly, Tim who is a masters cyclist who has been heavily involved with Schools cycling over the past few years brings his contagious enthusiasm for the sport to the board. Secondly James at only 20 years old will bring fresh new ideas and a wealth of cycling knowledge to our board for his young years. Two great people to represent our club.
It is exciting times ahead as the club looks to unite all club members. Our current board of Peter McCarthy, Mike Craine, Tim Lloyd, James Denholm and myself look forward to your support as the club build on the love we all have for cycling.

Easter is often all about kids and families enjoying far too many Easter eggs and hot cross buns while having quality time together. Cyclists will of course be keeping an eye on the weather to sneak out and cycle off all that chocolate. Whatever you are up to enjoy your Easter and stay safe on the bike as debris and slips are often forgotten when the weather does fine up.

A strong contingent of Bike Manawatu members went to Hawera to compete in the West Coast North Island road Championships last weekend.The results for the green team were fantastic with a sea of members on the podium accepting Gold,Silver or Bronze.Racing was competitive and challenging and the club congratulate all those members who competed.Join with us in congratulating the following members;

The following were unable to contest the WCNI champs due to attending an under 17 development camp. They raced the Waikato Bay of Plenty Champs which was run over the Nationals course in a large field of 47 riders. Race placing:13th Ethan Craine,27th Kyle Hoskin, 32nd Angus Clausen,37th Michael Richmond.
Track Prize Giving a Great Night.
Held at the Marist Sports Club this week the annual Club Track Prize giving was once again a well organised and run evening by Ian Gray and Kate Stewart. An excellent turn out and some remarkable new records set this year tells us the future looks bright for this popular cycling discipline. The prize giving results will be posted. Congratulations to everyone who contests the club track series at the Feilding track and special congratulations to all those who received awards. Well done.
We pay tribute to Libby Arbuckle for an outstanding year and for her winning the Clubs most improved rider. Her rise to make the New Zealand team is a proud moment for Libby, her family, her coach Mike McRedmond and of course all of Libby's friends and supporters.
Positive Club AGM
After posting my club chairperson annual report in the newsletter last week and sharing it at the AGM, the feedback has been positive and supportive from members towards the uniting of schools and masters to combine the resources of both for more club road races.
The power of any great club often comes down to the loyalty, unity and passion that all members have toward their club and each other. We see this illustrated by the unwavering loyalty of club members and devoted fans of house hold club names like Arsenal or Liverpool and other great clubs around the world no matter what their results or financial situation is. Wouldn't that be something great for our club to aim for?
To conduct more graded races for all levels of members (A,B,C,D grade)here in the Manawatu can happen with rider support. At the AGM some people put their hand up to help out as a race volunteer for one race event which was fantastic and appreciated. The more people that put their hand up to help out with one event, the quicker we will be able to plan a road race series for everyone to try out and enjoy.

Your annual fees for ride and race events in New Zealand when you affiliate with Bike Manawatu covers you for comprehensive liability insurance. The cost for your annual subscription is $75 for your Cycling NZ licence and $45 for Bike Manawatu licence. An affordable and important membership for your safety and wellbeing that protects you in the sport you love.

Bike Manawatu Membership Culture Shift.
Club events going forward. To conduct our Bike Manawatu annual event calendar successfully is going to require a club membership culture shift where each member would form part of a club volunteer roster list to help out at an event during the course of the year. The benefit to our club and yourself will be more well organised local events for riders, more people riding and less pressure on a select few race event organisers who get burnt out continually organising events for riders.
The club have an excellent rider base of schools and master’s riders, riding and competing in the Manawatu, across New Zealand and Internationally we can be proud of. As club members, we hope you agree with this concept. To all help out on a rotational basis is a small sacrifice to give back to your sport and your club.
It can take up to five or six people volunteers per event. The value of giving back is rewarding and extremely needed.
Those members who have volunteered their names by email to us the club really really appreciate and thank you. Unfortunately, this small number of people are not enough volunteers to conduct one event.
Your feedback would be valuable and we trust you understand and support this important initiative.

Taupo Flyer Success for Our Members
The tough 100k Taupo flyer is for many a fearsome fast and gruelling annual race to ride. Last weekend was no acceptation with a couple of new hills to negotiate. We congratulate all members who rode and got home safe.
As special congratulations to some of our club members for their outstanding rides and results.
Michelle Turner for her 1st placing in her female age group and 4th placing overall in the women's category. Well done Michelle who showed good form and has also entered into the upcoming WCNI Road Championships in Hawera on the 9th of April.
Carol Web was 2nd in her female race category and who also rode very well.
Young star Carne Groube was placed a close 6th place in the Elite Men's Race which wasn't for the faint hearted and Derek McNabb 3rd in his men's solo age category and 7th overall. Both fantastic efforts and well done boys.

This week popular and fun loving Christine Christie steps down as our club secretary to pursue more time with her grandchildren and family. Christine and been a valuable asset to the club and a key person at the interface between members, cycling NZ sponsors, trusts and the board and has done a fantastic job. Christine will still be an active club member and involved in running events like The Manfeild 6 hour Challenge and Gravel and Tar to name a couple plus continue with her Velo girls culture of riding and having fun.
Bike Manawatu have employed recruitment agency Adecco to manage the process on the clubs behalf to employ a new secretary. They will advertise and if you are interested in the position please apply. We welcome your interest. In the meantime over the next three months the club has appointed a temporary secretary to fulfil the role. We look forward to your support of the club and we will keep you informed.

"Bike Manawatu Happy Hour" Enjoyed.
Last Friday "Happy Hour" was enjoyed by a number of members at a balmy Lonestar on the square. One of our keen and valuable sponsors. The evening was warm and friendly with plenty of laughter. Don't forget the last Friday of every month.

Keeping Safe on your Bike
Cyclone Debbie has hit hard in New Zealand and the roads are covered with branches and all sorts of debris as well as slips to make cycling dangerous. Please take care and use your common sense when heading out on a ride knowing this and that other road users need to do the same who are bigger this us cyclists.
Appointment of Temporary Club Secretaries.
Bike Manawatu have employed recruitment agency Adecco to manage the employment process for a new club secretary. However, in the short term the club is pleased to have appointed Catriona and Tom Pirie as temporary club secretaries to fulfil the day to day duties required for the role. Catriona and Tom are long standing club members with experience and we are pleased to have them as part of the Bike Manawatu team. Thank you Tom and Catriona.

Congratulations to all Bike Manawatu National Championship Medal winners and your support teams on your outstanding results.
Held at the Avantidrome in Cambridge15-19 of March, Bike Manawatu were well represented by a good number of schools and Masters track riders who all represented the club with pride and racing etiquette. That kind of respect is noticed across NZ. Well done to you all.
Eighteen year old Michaela Drummond's win and gold medal performance in the Elite women's Omnium when she beat some big names in NZ track cycling in her first year racing at elite level was super impressive for all to see. Libby Arbuckle's amazing year saw her take out Silver in the under 19 Women's Omnium a fantastic result for Libby.
Meanwhile a busy and committed John Stewart produced two gold medals and a silver medal plus a New Zealand record for an amazing championship weekend. Gold in the Masters Men category2 (7.5k scratch race), Gold in the masters men3 (3000m individual pursuit-NZ record 3.30.703) Silver in the men's masters category2 (15k points race). Congratulations and well done Johnny.
Megan Blatchford took out gold and the New Zealand record (41.281) in the Masters women4 (500m time trial). A New Zealand record is amazing Megan. Congratulations!
Angus Claasen had a great weekend taking out Gold in the under 17 (500m time trial) and Silver in the under 17 boys sprint. A talent on the rise. Ben Irvine was a proud young boy when he collected his Bronze medal for the under 15 boy’s derby. A great ride.
In the teams events the master’s men's team of Grant Haggett, Richard Horn and Patrick Weinrauch won Silver in the 750m team sprint. Well done and congratulations boys.
We are proud of our under 17 Boys pursuit team of Angus Claasen, Michael Richmond,Ethan Craine and Kyle Hoskin who raced hard to take out the Bronze medal. A great result and congratulations.
To all those, Mums, Dads, families, coaches and supporters you to deserve to feel proud and part of the success everyone enjoyed at the Nationals. Congratulations and well done!

Another Great Kairanga Time trial Series Completed.
A massive thank you to John Arbuckle for organising yet again another fantastic time trial series for the club. John and his team of Mike Groube and Peter Robson who deal with traffic management along with those holders and marshals and Megan Blatchford who posts results on Facebook do a great job. On behalf of the club and riders thank you team for a job well done.
The ITT was successful with 81 riders over the series and 260 individual timed rides over 7 rounds. There were no reported incidents or accidents and the feedback from riders was positive while the use of the Horizons yard has been very valuable.
This is a great event for all club members.12km of time trialling takes 5 people to run the event and approximately an hour and a half of a volunteers time from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Bike Manawatu volunteer Roster needing your Help.
To conduct our Bike Manawatu Saturday races we require people to put your name on a roster list to help put on a rotational basis only. Generally, five or six people per events is required. Just email us and your name will go in the hat and we can set up a roster so that our race events can grow. Riders who put themselves as helpers mean you might miss one of the races which we hope is a small price to pay for having such race events. Please let us know if you are happy to go on the roster for our upcoming events. Thank you to the few people who have put their name forward. We are hoping more will join the roster to make this club initiative easier for race organisers and racing.
