BikeNZ honoured riders at a special function in Christchurch ahead of the national championships. BikeNZ is the umbrella body embracing all national bike and cycling organsations including Road and Track, BMX, Mountainbike and School cycling.

At the awards ceremony BikeNZ CEO, Kieran Turner said "We felt it important to honour our riders who achieve great things in our sport. While we treasure the efforts and performances of all of our riders, as a very young organisation we felt it was now an appropriate time to increase the awareness of these awards,”

Put in a call to one of our leading cyclists like Simon van Velthooven and he could either be at home briefly or anywhere on the planet, his passport taking a hammering.

Last week he was in Invercargill dead-heating with rival Eddie Dawkins.

This week, after a 30-hour flight, the 22-year-old is in Cali, Colombia, as is Palmerston North pursuiter Jesse Sergent, competing in a World Cup track meet.

The very popular Wednesday Night Individual Time-Trial series concluded this week with the final round and prize-giving at Kairanga Hall. For BikeManawatu members who are not familiar with this series, it runs twice over the summer months in two nine week blocks, once from October to December and again from January to March. The course starts on Kairanga-Bunnythorpe Rd (at the Rongotea Rd corner and heads out for 6 km (onto Lockwood Rd) and back for a total of 12 km. Points are awarded by comparing individual riders' times between weeks - 2 points for posting a personal best, 1 point otherwise.

The most recent series was our most successful to date with over 130 unique riders taking part. The highest number of riders on a single night was 64 and on average we had approximately 45 riders.
