This year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet; event organisers Events Manawatu and Destination Manawatu have come up with a modified course and new innovations.

Event Director Selwyn Brown says” The day promises to be a real celebration of cycling in the Manawatu along with a Country Fare taking place in the Square, with food stalls, a live band playing all afternoon and prize giving with fabulous prises starting at the earlier time of 4.30pm.

Highlights of the day include:

1. An Elite race starting at 10.30am with and amazing prize pool of training grants, including:

· $4,000 for the first rider home

· $1000, $500, $400,5th-7th $300, 8th – 10th $250 1st under 23 rider $200 Under 19 riders $300, $200, $100.

A fantastic time trial series has just ended but there is one final thing to be completed on Wednesday night at Kairanga community hall. And that is the prizegiving.

If the weather is kind a final time trial will be held but there will be no points awarded. The start of the time trials will be earlier than normal as daylight is diminishing by the time we get to the end and we do have prize giving to get through also. So please if you are coming out on your bike arrive earlier than normal – the first rider will be off at 6pm so race briefing will be done at 5.55pm Registration will close at 5.50pm. If you are not registered by this time you will not be allowed to ride.

The time trial series was run over 8 weeks and over that time there have been some outstanding performances with everyone trying to better their previous best time. For those people that attended on more than one occasion their points were accumulated and for Bike Manawatu members whose age details are known a new list of age group course records has been compiled and will be presented at the prize giving.

Results will be posted at the end of this article shortly

So you enjoy riding your road bike and maybe competing in fun rides? But have you experienced the fun and exhilaration of Road Racing? If not, below are some reasons to add it to your “Top-Things-To-Do-In-2012” List ….

1. Challenge your mind and body with something new.
How long have you been doing the same rides, with the same people, at the same time of week?  Stepping out of your comfort zone is mentally refreshing and hugely rewarding.

2. Improve your cycling
With different courses, distances, and terrain, for each race you’re pushing your body to adapt and improve.

At the inaugural la Femme fun ride I was the lucky recipient of a fantastic prize donated by the major sponsor, Churchyard Physiotherapy. The prize, a Musculoskeletal Screening, included a one hour assessment with a written report and exercise plan and two follow-up sessions.

Off I went to Churchyard Physio where the fabulous Fiona O’Connor put me through a range of movements particularly looking at those muscles and joints used in cycling, as well as balance and flexibility. The purpose of this was to identify strengths and weaknesses and develop an exercise plan tailored to my needs. I have the plan and now all I have to do is keep to it knowing that there’s a follow-up visit in six weeks. Fiona assures me my unstable knees will be much improved, so here’s hoping!

Regardless of your level of participation, a Musculoskeletal Screening is a great way to get expertly checked out and ultimately make cycling more enjoyable.

Thanks again Fiona

We are now entering the 20th century or at least modern times with registering for club events.

If you have a look on the club calendar for this week you will see that it is a circuit race in Feilding.

And in the details it tells you to click on this link which will let you as a member of Bike Manawatu to use your login and password to directly register for the event.

This is part of the software that is available to us through Bike NZ. I am still getting to grips with all of its capabilities and it has only become available to bike clubs in NZ.

So  have a look and see what you think about it.
