After a rough season with my concussion and glandular fever, I managed to rack up enough results to make the NZ u19 team to ride Australian Nationals in Noosa. I and fellow team mate Logan Griffin managed to organize some extra racing in Aussie with a team called Goldcross-Rapida Vecchi, racing in the QTRS series round 3. We were set to fly out of New Zealand on the 27th and return on the 8^th of July hopefully with some great racing and results.

After flying from Palmerston North to Auckland and meeting Logan, we arrived in Brisbane at around 5:00pm. We were then picked up by Goldcross rider Micheal Davis and went back to his house to stay for the next few days. The first day we went for an easy ride around Brisbane, all of which was in the city, which was a bit of a change from the usual scenic country rides. We then picked up our team car and had a look around Brisbane which was rather interesting. Then had another relaxed night to prepare for our first race the next day. Had a bit of a culture check when I noticed turkeys, crows and several other strange animals in the middle of Brisbane…

STATS - 38 riders registered and started - 37 finished

The weather in the morning was perfect for riding – sun shining, mild breeze. So things were looking good for a reasonable turnout in the afternoon at Ashhurst for the grading race and start of the winter season of club racing.

The courses on offer were either 2 laps of the Ashhurst , Valley Rd, Colyton and back to Ashhurst loop or 1 lap. On offer was a recreational bunch ride following the same course but riding as a bunch and a short ride for the juniors but no one took up those offers. For the next few races these options will also be offered so if anyone wants to join in for these rides – just come along – you would be made very welcome and at the end of some of the rides is even afternoon tea.

Registrations on line were left open until 10 am so that a reasonable start list could be printed out. Unfortunately people didn’t take this opportunity (perhaps they were all waiting to see what the weather would do).

After racing in Japan on the 50‘s style steel bikes it was very rewarding going to a carbon bike because it was like getting into a Golf GTi after zipping around in a diesel for 3 months. The carbon fibre bikes are much stiffer and transfer the power more directly and the disc wheels allow you to generate a greater speed. Also after being in Japan racing on much bigger gears and therefore becoming a more powerful rider it was excellent to be able to ride a bigger gear after race on it- think biggest gear on your mountain bike at home... It was great once the rest of the team arrived because they were all frothing to get on the track and stuck into some racing.

PNBHS riders dominated the placings in the Manawatu Schools Cycling competition held on 30 June. Over 80 experienced and novice riders from the Manawatu and surrounding region’s schools participated in a 2.3km hill climb up Saddle Road, then took on a 10km individual time trial down Pohangina Valley Road. A challenging points race around the streets of Ashhurst concluded the event. The conditions were cold with a significant wind chill factor.

The U15 boys’ had a small field of three riders from Waiopehu, Freyberg and Fergus Bryan from PNBHS. Thomas Garbett from Waiopehu dominated all events whilst PNBHS rider Fergus Bryan finished second in all three races to take out the silver medal at the end of the day.
