It is Sunday 13 December and five riders from the Manawatu (along with 50 riders from the Waikato and Auckland Region) are tackling the Waihi Midsummer Madness time trial.

It has to be the toughest time trial event in New Zealand. I make it 127km with about 1360 vertical metres of climbing. Apparently there is some great scenery…but I have to admit it is hard to fully appreciate that during the ride.

A last minute decision to enter this tour was a good one, to race with New Zealands top elite riders was a real eye opener.

I was a really nervous at the start but learnt plenty of skills from the guys, it’s a lot different riding from your average local fun ride. There's a lot of nerves running though you which means you have to be on the ball the whole time.

Nelson is pretty well known for hot temperatures and sunny days. Apparently this year was the worst conditions they have had for a couple of years but the weather was still really nice.

A couple of weeks after my Aussie 900+ km adventure Christine and I lined up for the start of the 13 stage 750 km cycle challenge from Wellington to Auckland.

Initially I thought the stage style of ride would be out of my comfort zone as I would normally have preferred to attempt it in one stint but we both found that the stages although fast were manageable and the organisation first class.

The weather wasn’t too inviting this year for the 2010 Hub Tour in the beautiful Hawkes Bay, but the results for our Marist riders where excellent.

Sjoerd van Wagtendonk and Luke McCarthy rode A-Grade with an impressive field of riders including Michael Torkler, Tom Findlay and Jeremy Yates. Both Sjoerd and Luke finished the 5-stage weekend, which was a great accomplishment in itself with such a big field of national riders.Matiu Kaihau

The Wanganui weather managed to hold off for the first night of racing with some exciting time trials and scratch races for Marist and Feilding riders.

clip_image002Kate Stewart rode in her first ever track competition and won the U15 500m TT quite convincingly. Mark Findlay, Jaycob Humphries and Sean Whitehouse came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the U17 500m TT and 2000m pursuit race. Matiu Kaihau won the U19 kilo TT with Josh Chard coming 4th and Sjoerd finishing 5th.

Jaycob rode strongly to win both U17 scratch races, with Sean and Mark coming 2nd and 3rd respectively in an exciting finish across the line. The senior men’s racing was fast and furious over the 32 lap scratch race with Matiu Kaihau finishing 1st in the U19 grade, Josh Chard 3rd and Sjoerd 4th.

The weather played havoc on Saturday so racing was delayed until Sunday, which just allowed the track to dry out enough for racing. Sprints, pursuits and points races were held with awesome results from all our riders.
