Christie 250The Christie250, which started as one man's challenge to knock a cycle ride to Taupo off his "bucket list" before he died, has turned into an annual cancer fundraiser for a group of 19 cyclists who will tackle the route for the third time in April.

Businessman Mike Christie has collected a group of friends and cycling enthusiasts who didn't want the first 250km ride to be the last.

Pilates with Leanne

Leanne RobinsonWHY? Many athletes use Pilates for ‘Core Strength’ and to refine the precise use of their body. Pilates is particularly recommended for Cyclists as cycling causes overuse in mobilising muscles and underuse in deep stabilising muscles, creating muscle imbalances that affect your performance and recovery.

Cycling is a healthy sport that enables you to become fit relatively quickly; however, it involves holding an awkward position for sustained periods of time, which may then result in the following imbalances and problems:

The Country Road ClassicWith a $50,000 prize pool on offer, the inaugural 160km Country Road Manawatu Cycle Classic on April 16 is a great new edition to the NZ race calendar.

Whether you are an elite rider or recreational rider, this new event has a prize on offer for you.

Elites will battle for the $3,000 winner's prize as well as the $1,000 King of the Mountain prize money, but in this race, recreational riders do not miss out.

Event organiser Selwyn Brown has come up with a new way of rewarding recreational riders, the Recreational Age Based Handicap Challenge, where the winner will be decided by a formula applied to all solo riders' finish time.

I like to apologise to Ashhurst rider Harison Rickards. He was a late entry to the CHB tour and BM and I overlooked him when writing the article on the CHB junior tour. This is of consequence because it means that Bike Manawatu  had riders in all 8 categories.

Lucy and Kim from Churchyard physiotherapy are offering sessions which take you through a variety of stretching and core stability exercises to help improve your cycling.
N.B the dates shown are for “The First Session” so you can start on any of the dates shown.
